What does the position entail
As a Computer Vision & Data Science researcher-lecturer, you are an important link between our clients and our students. You make sure that students are prepared to strengthen the business world as innovative professionals. You act as a sounding board and you passionately involve the students with your knowledge and skills from practice. At the same time, you will work with the students on various real-life projects in the following areas: computer vision, data science, deep learning, machine learning and hyperspectral image processing.An example of a successful project is an assignment from an innovative healthcare company. This company is working on a solution to ‘seam leakage’, a dangerous thing that can occur during operations. Our research group was asked to research a measurement tool that could map the quality of tissue – of the intestinal wall, in this case. The recommended measurement tool now reveals the micro (blood) circulation of the tissue, allowing the surgeon to make better decisions and reducing ‘seam leakage’. This means fewer intensive care admissions and faster recovery for patients.

Why will you be doing this
Because you’re passionate about your field. You want to further develop the field through research and contribute to applications in practice. You will also share your knowledge with our students, contributing to both research and education. As a research group, we offer a minor within the bachelor and an in-house Computer Vision & Data Science master’s programme. You will be part of the teaching team, which will involve helping develop solid teaching materials and working with students on real-life practical issues as a coach and content expert. The combination of practice, research and education is what makes this job so special and versatile. It gets you excited to see our wealth of industrial inspection cameras; from UV, VIS, NIR, SWIR and LWIR to hyperspectral. For analysing large amounts of image data, we have at our disposal our own high-performance computing cluster, with GPU computing power to carry out challenging research tasks.

What should you expect to do during a working day
It’s Monday morning. You and your colleagues start the working week with a SCRUM meeting. You will discuss problems and challenges, but you will also reflect on the successes of last week. After the meeting, you have an appointment with a potential client. And after that, you get to work on a quotation.
In the afternoon, you can be found in the mechanical recycling lab. There, with three of your students and the Circular Plastics research group, you work on a project for a local waste separation company. You are performing a plastic analysis with hyperspectral cameras. The goal? Even better recycling. Yesterday, you read a scientific article about a method that might work well for this data, and you implement this method and test it together with your students that same afternoon. Over the course of this week, you will have a progress meeting with your client in which you discuss the new method and other realised developments. You regularly visit the client on location, but he also comes to you regularly, as is the case this time. A wonderful opportunity to show what you have to offer. Your working day is almost over when you receive an e-mail with an agreement to your quotation: a new project can be set up. You look forward to getting started on this right away tomorrow.

The job requirements

• You have a master’s degree or PhD in the field of computer vision, data science or similar;
• You have demonstrable work experience in the world of computer vision, data science and deep learning;
• You have an excellent command of the English language both orally and in writing.

• You have communication skills, you know how to speak to your clients correctly and clearly and you are able to communicate your knowledge to your students in an enthusiastic way.
• You maintain a good overview of the different projects. You know how to set the right priorities and you act decisively. You are not afraid to take responsibility.
• You think in terms of solutions. Sometimes they are simple, sometimes they are innovative. And you always put the client’s wishes first.

These are your employment conditions
As a Computer Vision & Data Science researcher-lecturer, you have all the space, possibilities and freedom you need to further develop yourself. We invest in your development and facilitate you in obtaining the initial qualification for Didactic Competence (if you do not already have it). A workplace with sociable and inspiring colleagues. Your salary and job level will, depending on your knowledge, experience and employability, be a maximum of € 5.936,77 (scale 11, cao-HBO) gross per month. You will also receive 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus. Pension scheme trough the ABP. The contract will initially be for one year, after which extension and expansion are amongst the possibilities. Start date: as soon as possible.
